Copyrite helps to reduce the environmental impact of leading housing association Radian by ensuring toner cartridges never reach landfill sites

Only 15% of the 65 million printer ink and toner cartridges used in the UK are recycled. The majority end up in landfill where it can take more than a thousand years for them to break down

Although some ink and toner cartridges can be refilled, once toner bottles are empty, they cannot be refilled or reused. Consequently, many third party refillers do not collect them, resulting in a large proportion ending up in landfill sites.

The Copyrite Toner Recycling Service

Radian’s objective is for residents and stakeholders to enjoy a better quality of life, now and in the future which means not using up resources faster than the planet can replenish them. Looking at new ways to save energy, reduce waste and conserve water contributes to greener homes and cleaner environments.

As one of the many Ricoh initiatives implemented by Copyrite, the recycling of ink and toner cartridges is one of the most significant, ensuring they are re-used and don’t end up in landfill.

Zero Landfill Solution at Radian – the process

-       Toner cartridges are collected by Radian and sent to a processing centre where they are weighed and tracked prior to recycling

-       A full tracked asset report is produced which can be utilised for ISO14001/EMAS Accreditation and audit purposes (copies are available on request)

Onward Processing & Recycling

-       Metals and materials other than plastics are fully recycled

-       Packaging materials (plastic and cardboard) are recycled

-       Remaining bottles & cartridges are granulated & reprocessed into high quality polymer which can be used in the manufacture of washing machines, electrical casings and many other items.

-       Toner is removed during this process and used in the manufacture of asphalt, concrete and cement, tile resin and insulation material

Rodger Mills, Facilities Manager (South) at Radian said, “The development of low-to- zero carbon homes using various modern methods of construction is integral to the Radian strategy. A range of renewable energy solutions and procurement methods are used which enables us to test and evaluate the success in delivering affordable, sustainable, comfortable and welcoming homes for Radian’s residents. We aim to achieve the government’s stated goal of Carbon Zero housing by 2016. The Copyrite Zero Landfill Solution supports our determination to reduce waste and protect the environment”.

Ian Stewart, Director of Copyrite explained, “Commitment to sustainability is a part of the Copyrite heritage and waste management is a particular focus. Operations generate paper, plastic and metal waste, which we strive to consume less and recycle more to reduce the environmental impact. Copyrite encourages individual responsibility for recycling initiatives and provides facilities for paper, printer toners, plastics and metal”.
